It’s International Women’s Day and we want to celebrate the women in all departments at NMB such as engineering, customer services, procurement, HR and finance. The theme this year is Embrace Equity; equity means creating an inclusive world, so let’s embrace it. 

Female mechanics now account for 10% of the workforce, with the number working in the UK rising by 125% since 2011. The fact that this number is rising is more reason to enforce equity in our workplace. 25.4% of girls aged 16 to 18 would consider a career in engineering. We want to make sure the industry is ready for equal opportunities for women and men. 

There is a different between equity and equality and we need to understand, acknowledge and value these meanings. Equality is when each individual or group of people is given the same opportunities and everyone is on a level playing field. Equity is recognising that everyone has different requirements and circumstances. To reach an equal outcome that person needs the exact resources and opportunities provided to them. Often, women have a more variety of requirements in and out of the workplace. To take on equity, people need to understand the root causes of outcome imbalances in society.  

We can all challenge gender discrimination, draw attention to bias, and seek out inclusion. Through the process of equity, we can reach equality. Equally, International Men’s Day is on 19^th November.
